The dynamics of uricemia, diurnal uricosuria, uric acid excretion by the salivary glands, and xanthine oxidase activity were studied in patients with cardiac insufficiency receiving cardiac glycosides and diuretics. One hundred and thirty-seven patients were examined. The parameters relating to diurnal uricosuria decreased, but those relating to the other conditions increased, as cardiac insufficiency in coronary heart disease patients progressed. A trend for decreased hyperuricemia and xanthine oxidase activity was observed, as diurnal uricosuria decreased when the patients were given cardiac glycosides and diuretics. The effectiveness of cardiac glycosides and diuretics intensified when the drugs were combined with allopurinol.
