Census data on buffalo and cattle populations taken in 1951 to 1982 were analysed using linear, exponential, log-linear and quadratic models. The exponential model was found to provide the best fit for data on populations in individual states and the whole country. The av. annual population growth rate for female buffaloes of breeding age and 'young' buffaloes was 1.57 and 1.54% resp., the corresponding values for cattle were 0.84 and 0.64%. The projected numbers of femalefemale of breeding age and young stock of buffaloes and cattle for each yr from 1982 to 2000 are tabulated for each state.
