To test and compare the efficacy and tolerability of Lactitol crystalline powder (Importal, Zyma) and of Lactulose syrup (Duphalac, Duphar) as laxatives, 60 chronically constipated patients of both sexes were randomly assigned to receive either laxative over a period of two weeks. The average applied dosages were 20 g lactitol and 30 ml lactulose, single dose in the evening. Both products were found to be efficacious in increasing stool frequency: patients receiving lactitol experienced at least one bowel movement on 75% of the days of the study, on patients receiving lactulose on 70% of the days. Both laxatives were well tolerated.
