The degradation of bovine faecal pats containing ivermectin

The breakdown of faecal pats (20 pats in 2 fields) from 2 groups each of 6 calves that had received pour-on ivermectin (500 micro g/kg) after 3, 8 and 13 weeks at grass was similar to that of faecal pats (20 pats in 2 fields) from 2 groups each of 6 untreated calves. The diameter, depth and weight of the pats were studied for 10 weeks beginning one week after the last ivermectin treatment. The fauna in bovine faecal pats was not monitored, but the rate of breakdown suggests that if the fauna involved in degradation of faeces were adversely affected by ivermectin, rapid repopulation of the pats by these species had occurred.
