Immunodiagnosis of rhodesiense sleeping sickness: detection of circulating trypanosomal antigens in sera and cerebrospinal fluid by enzyme immunoassay using a monoclonal antibody

A MAb against common surface plasma membrane antigens of procyclic Trypanosoma rhodesiense was used in a sandwich ELISA to detect circulating antigen in the sera of 108 patients with T. rhodesiense sleeping sickness; 101 (93.5%) of the sera had circulating antigens at titres of 1:10 to 1:160 whereas sera of blood donors (187) and of patients with leishmaniasis (10), schistosomiasis (17) and malaria (23) were negative. The antigen detected in the sera was also detected in the CSF. These latter results are being evaluated.
