Praziquantel in the treatment of Taenia saginata

A 41-year-old Ethiopian with T. saginata infection and a history of intolerance of other anthelmintics, was treated with a single dose of 600 mg of praziquantel. He experienced mild abdominal pain, vomiting and watery diarrhoea, and the worm was expelled within 2 h of treatment, with the scolex intact. It is concluded that praziquantel is suitable for the treatment of patients with taeniasis who have experienced side effects with other drugs.
