176 postpartum cows in 19 herds were inseminated on the 2nd, 3rd or 4th day on which a low milk progesterone concentration was indicated by the use of a commercial analysis kit. The CR of cows inseminated on the 3 days was 20.2, 19.6 and 9.8% resp.; that for cows inseminated with Limousin, Hereford, Friesian and Charolais semen (provided by 1 bull per breed) was 11.0, 14.9, 23.7 and 20.0% resp. For 528 contemporary cows inseminated at observed oestrus in the same herds, the CR was 53%.
