Increased level of myelin basic protein in cerebrospinal fluid of patients of Japanese encephalitis

Myelin basic protein (MBP) levels were determined in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples of patients of Japanese encephalitis (6) and other neurological disorders viz., subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (4), multiple sclerosis (6), acute transverse myelitis (3), and compared with CSF from five patients with non-neurological disorders (range 0.14-1.9 ng/ml). Five of six CSF samples of JE patients showed very high levels of MBP (range 9-32 ng/ml). MBP levels in patients with all the other neurological disorders were comparable with normal controls except in one patient with acute transverse myelitis. The elevated level of MBP in JE patients possibly reflects the severity of brain damage.
