Mice of the CDF1 strain (BALB/cxDBA/2) were inoculated intraperitoneally with 104 cells of lymphatic leukaemia L 1210 and killed 11 days later. Ultraenzymatic examination of spleen segments showed a significant decrease in activity of adenosine triphosphatase and of glucose-6-phosphatase, and increased acid phosphatase in leukaemic mice when compared to control mice, indicating destabilization of biological membranes. It is suggested that destabilization of these cell membranes favours the carcinogenic and cocarcinogenic factors and enables the leukaemia virus to enter the lymphatic cells.
