In all but 3 out of 68 breast-fed infants, a rise in plasma Ca was observed by 6-9 days, the mean Ca rise recorded being 0.8 mg/100 ml. By contrast, appr ox. one-third of 107 infants fed an evaporated cows' milk preparation showed reduced plasma Ca levels by 6-9 days, levels in some cases falling by 2.3 mg/100 ml. Plasma Mg levels showed no change in the breast-fed group, but there were significant falls in the artificially-fed group.
