In vitro antibacterial activity of depsidone chlorate 1'-chloropannarine

Using the tube dilution method, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1-chloropannarin, a chlorinated depsidone isolated from lichens, was determined for 75 gram-positive bacterial strains and 27 pathogenic and opportunistic fungal strains, Streptococcus peneumoniae and Micrococcus luteus showed the lowest MIC value, 0.39 .mu.g ml-1. MIC of 2.80 and 2.74 .mu.g ml-1 were obtained for Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis respectively. The specific inhibition constant (Kc) of the drug was 4.5 .times. 10-5 min-1 ml .mu.g-1 and was obtained from generation curves of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 3598. 1-chloropannarin showed greater antibacterial activity against S. epidermidis than erythromycin and penicillin. MIC for fungi fluctuated between 35.0 and 58.6 .mu.g ml-1; the calculated value for Candida albicans was 40 .mu.g ml-1.
