When the author was carrying out vasectomy counseling for the Family Planning Association, the approach always was that the couple had come for sterilization and that all methods of male and female sterilization should be presented. This took at least 40 minutes. Inappropriate sterilizations leading to requests for reversal could be reduced by good counseling before operation. Time spent counseling is cost-effective when it aims to prevent sterilizations which are later regretted, and also when it contributes to the well-being of the majority who desire the sterilization.
