Hydrocurve II bifocal contact lenses: a clinical perspective

Eighty-one presbyopic patients were fit with Hydrocurve II hydrogel bifocal contact lenses. Of these patients, there were 46 (57%) who found the initial vision to be acceptable and in whom the fit was adequate. Lenses were dispensed to these patients. At 4 weeks of follow-up, 23 of the 46 patients (50%) were successfully wearing their lenses, and 23 had discontinued wear. We found that spherical distance prescription and spectacle add were not criteria for success with the lens. However, corneal astigmatism of 1.00 D or less and spectacle astigmatism of 0.50 D or less were required for success. Among the successful patients, 91% were fully adapted to the lenses within 1 week. The lenses were particularly successful among patients who used their eyes at the near point and also among patients who required good vision at many different distances and angles of gaze.
