Management of refractive errors in myopic athletes. A comparison of the Bausch and Lomb Soflens (Polymacon) contact lenses with glasses, hard lenses, and no correction

The effectiveness of the Bausch and Lomb Soflens (polymacon) contact lenses in correcting myopia during athletic competition was evaluated in 78 athletes. Of all the athletes fitted 86% preferred the soft contact lenses. Of the 36 athletes previously participating in sports without any correction, 9 preferred the soft contact lenses. Of the 18 athletes previously using glasses and of the 24 athletes previously using hard contact lenses, preference for the soft contact lenses was 78% and 79%, respectively. The major advantages of the soft contact lenses were that no lenses were lost or dislodged from the eye during competition and that excellent comfort was easily obtained. Central visual acuity, peripheral vision and vision with eye movements were good. The major disadvantage was the inability to correct corneal astigmatism of > 2 diopters consistently.
