Fitting presbyopic patients with soft bifocal contact lenses has traditionally been problematic. We used the Alges lens, a new soft bifocal contact lens with a center add design, to fit 17 presbyopic patients. Nine patients (53%) were successfully fitted with the lens (average follow-up period: 6.5 months). The successful patients had a best corrected vision of 20/25 or better and were able to read at least five point type. The patients who could not be fitted with the Alges Bifocal Contact Lens complained of poor near vision (5 patients), poor distance vision (2 patients), and lens discomfort (1 patient).
