A new surgical method for the surgical management of ventral compression of the thoracic spinal cord

This paper deals with an innovative surgical technique for the treatment of thoracal extramedullary space occupying lesions especially that of herniated discs located in the thoracic segment of the spinal canal. The author's modification.sbd.laminectomy combined with pediculo-arthrotomy.sbd.renders possible ventral removal of lesions without extensive retraction of the vulnerable spinal cord. The method was successfuly used not only for the treatment of herniated thoracic discs, but for the extirpation of ventrally located intradural tumors, as well. 8 patients presented with herniated disc, 2 extradural and 2 intradural tumor cases were operated with this technique. Surgical technique and results will be elaborated in detail.
