Thirty postapoplectic hemiplegic patients with toe flexor or extensor contractures who also had callosities and clavi or flexor spasms while walking were treated with silicone splinting of the toes on the paretic site. Five patients defaulted during trial, all of the remaining 25 patients used the splint daily. Twenty-one patients felt more secure while walking and 13 patients reported diminished pain. Callositias and clavi disappeared in 10 out of 11 patients and fleksionsspasms in 13 out of 17 patients. Both mechanical correction of toe positions and inhibition of spasticity probably contributed to improvement.
