Between January 1986 and February 1987, 10 strains of Neisseria meningitidis with decreased susceptibility to penicillin (CM .gtoreq. 0.1 .mu.g/ml) have been isolated at three hospitals of the area of Barcelona. These strains were isolated from blood and/or cerebrospinal fluid of children with meningococcemia, aged between 11 months and 12 years. The evolution of 9 patients was uneventful and one died due to fulminant septic shock. All patients were treated with standard doses of penicillin or cefotaxime. Minimal inhibitory concentrations to penicillin were 0.1 .mu.g/ml (one strain), 0.2 .mu.g/ml (seven strains) and 0.4 .mu.g/ml (two strains). Susceptibilities to other six antimicrobial agents (ampicillin, rifampin, chloramphenicol, cefotaxime, spiramicin and sulphadiacine) were also studied.
