A 35-year-old woman presented in September 1987 in Israel, with painful, migratory, soft-tissue swelling and pruritis of the thighs, lower abdomen and scapular region. The blood leukocyte count was 12 000 mmsuperscript 3, with eosinophilia of 55%. Examination of skin snips and blood samples did not reveal microfilariae. In November 1987, the patient experienced acute pain and "movement" in the right eye. An immature female Loa loa was extracted from under the lower bulbar conjunctiva, and the patient subsequently remained well. The infection was probably acquired during a 2-year stay in Cameroon.
