A combined light and electron microscopic study was made of a case of glomerulonephritis, a disease complex seen increasingly in dogs over the last few years in Glasgow Veterinary School. In this dog, which had proteinuria and hypoalbuminaemia, the main lesions were thickening of the glomerular basement membrane by electron-dense deposits and extensive fusion of the foot processes of the epithelial podocytes. Although the aetiology was unknown an immunological disorder was suspected. The advantage of 1 mu m sections embedded in epoxy resin for light microscopic examination of glomeruli over sections conventionally embedded in wax is demonstrated.
