Ovarian activity of primiparous Holstein-Friesian crossbred cows reared under different farm conditions was monitored by regular clinical examinations and by progesterone assay of milk samples collected after calving, at 3- to 4-day intervals, over a period of about 12 weeks. Of the ovarian disorders only prolonged postpartal acyclia proved to be rather common (55.8%). This primarily occurred in Group I (cows of poor body condition, small body size and fed rather poorly throughout) and Group II (small-sized but overfed cows intiially kept on a poor, then, in the last trimester of pregnancy, on an unjustifiably rich feed). Ovarian activity and conception were the most favourable in Group III (well-developed cows of medium body condition, showing well-balanced development throughout). In Groups I and II there was a significant positive correlation between the daily milk production of cows at the peak of lactation and the duration of postpartal acyclia (r = 0.791; P < 0.01, and r = 0.445, P < 0.1 in Group I and Group II, respectively). No such correlation was demonstrable for Group III (r = 0.197, P > 0.1).
