A prospective randomised study was undertaken to compare the efficacy of a 3 mg prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in oral and gel form for the initiation of cervical ripening before the induction of labour in medical and obstetrical indicated primipara women with a Bishop score of 4 or less. The successful rate was 92 per cent in the gel group compared to 68 per cent in the oral group and this was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Spontaneous labour occurred 68 per cent in the gel group compared to 40 per cent in the oral group, the differences was statistically significant (P < 0.05). There were no maternal of fetal complications. The prostaglandin gel was found to be superior to the oral prostaglandin in priming the unfavourable cervix before induction of labour.
