Hybridoma and recombinant DNA technology, and protein engineering are briefly described. Recent developments in research on schistosomiasis are reviewed as follows: the identification of immunogenic and protective parasite antigens; vaccine development; the production of anti-idiotype antibodies; stage-specific gene expression; proteolytic enzymes. Applications of biotechnological techniques to the diagnosis of trematode infections, and to the study of Fasciola hepatica and Paragonimus, the pharmacology of helminth parasites, host genetics and host-parasite relationships are discussed.
