An examination is presented as to how migration affects the traditional perceptions of girls and boys familial roles in Thailand and whether these roles are reinforced or challenged by the migration process. The study notes that young women appear to benefit from better jobs outside the village than men. However the traditional role of the young women to care for parents may affect their abilities and opportunities. The social struggle for girls and young women may have profound consequences for their future. The study investigates the rapidly changing and growing urban market in relation to the impact it has on the traditional gender roles.
