Comparative study of the effect of kreon and cotazyme forte in children with cystic fibrosis

The pancreatic enzyme supplementation has proved to be a substantial element in the therapy of CF. In severe cases the Cotazym forte fails to control the malabsorption even in high doses, which can lead to hyperuricaemia at the same time. The authors compared the effects of a traditional pancreatin product (Cotazym forte) with Kreon an enteric coated capsule, the latter providing a complete protection against inactivation by gastric juices and containing the lypase/trypsin activity in a physiological ratio. The investigators concluded that although the Kreon treatment contained the lowest daily dosage of pancreatin it was most effective. It has reduced the faecal fat excretion, increased the body weight and improved the patients' condition. The more severe the children's complaints were the better Kreon's advantages turned out to be. These results emphasize that the treatment of choice is the Kreon especially in severe cases.
