Phenology, reproductive behaviour, bud, foliage and shoot development, and photosynthate allocation were analysed for 49 woody plant or liana species growing in broadleaved forest located at the Iide mountains, Honshu, Japan. Observations were made on 17 occasions between May and November 1988. Data were used to compare life histories of the 4 principal tree species: (1) Fagus crenata, a late-successional species with seeds dispersed by gravity; (2) Populus maximowiczii, an early-successional species with rapid early growth and wind-dispersed seeds; (3) Fraxinus mandshurica and Pterocarya rhoifolia, intermediate species which occurred as gap species.
