After an introduction discussing the problems of degradation and non-sustainability of existing patterns of tropical forest exploitation, this chapter goes on to evaluate various natural forest management systems which have been attempted, including the Malayan Uniform System, the Tropical Shelterwood System, Polycyclic Felling Systems, the Strip-Clearcut System, and Low-Intensity Clearcutting. The rest of the chapter discusses an integrated approach to forest management (which includes consideration of climate, topography, soil fertility, forest structure, marketability, previous disturbance, local population pressure and transport) and regulation, marketing and land control (including silvicultural sustainability, economic profitability and social feasibility).
