Blood samples were taken from 21 goats (7 of each breed Beetal, Black Bengal and their crosses) 5 days before parturition, on the day of parturition and 2 and 5 days post partum. Total blood proteins, Ca, Mg, inorganic P, cholesterol, Fe and Cu were measured. There were no significant differences during the periparturient period, all values being within the range of physiological normal values. However there were distinct breed differences in cholesterol and Fe. Cholesterol and Fe values were higher in Black Bengal than in Beetal and crosses.
