Prevalence of disease conditions and pregnancy in sheep and goats seen over a three year period in Enugu abattoir, Nigeria

Of 180 398 goats and 30 863 sheep slaughtered in Enugu abattoir, 1983-1985, 41.48% and 59.72% respectively were females and 4.20%, 5.82% respectively were pregnant. In goats emaciation occurred in 2.32%, mange in 0.33%, fractures in 0.17%, pox-like disease in 0.34% and foot-rot in 0.01%. In sheep emaciation occurred in 3.31%, diarrhoea/dysentery in 3.26%, mange in 0.01% and fractures in 1.58%. At meat inspection, 0.68% of total goat and sheep population (211 261) were infected with fascioliasis and 55.31% of all livers were totally condemned at the abattoir. Various types of pneumonia were found in 1.29% of the population causing 43.89% of all lungs to be totally condemned. Pimply gut (oesophagostomiasis) occurred in 3% of the population and caused 80.36% of intestines to be totally condemned.
