Music during surgery for patients with spinal anesthesia

A prospective randomized investigation was undertaken to investigate the use of sedatives and the attitudes to music during operations under spinal anaesthesia. Twenty-nine out of 30 patients expressed satisfaction on listening to music and, should they have other operations under regional anaesthesia, they would choose this method again. The use of sedatives was significantly less in the groups who listened to music and this is considered to express the sedative and distracting effects of music. This form of musical accompaniment is found to be suitable during operation, either alone or as a supplement to other sedative measures.
