Breast milk total nitrogen nonprotein nitrogen and lactoferrin content

One hundred and twenty one lactating women were selected from three villages of KV block, district Varanasi for breast milk estimation of total nitrogen (TN), non-protein nitrogen (NPN) and lactoferrin (Lf). The second feed of the day of breast milk was collected. Forty eight women agreed for milk volume estimation which was performed in their homes. The total protein content in a day was calculated on the basis of colostrum and mature milk produced. The TN, NPN and Lf had significantly higher values in colostrum as compared to the mature milk. The decrease in TN, NPN and Lf showed significantly negative relationship with the lactational age. The well-nourished women showed marginally higher means for TN and protein while NPN and Lf showed no relationship with maternal nutritional status. The women having hemoglobin under 11 g/dl and over 11 g/dl did not show any difference for the breast milk parameters studied.
