Types of cortical branches of the posterior cerebral artery in man

Studies were performed on 360 cerebral hemispheres. Five types of cortical branches arising from the posterior cerebral artery were distinguished. In 19.7% of cases cerebral cortex was exclusively supplied by terminal branches of the posterior cerebral artery, viz., lateral and medial occipital arteries (type I). In remaining cases the cortex received also branches from the trunk of the posterior cerebral artery. In 9.7% of cases it was hippocampal branch (type II), in 51.1% anterior temporal branch (type III), in 19.7% both above arteries (type IV), and in 0.3% two anterior temporal arteries and occipitotemporal branch (type V).
