Transit time of the maturing granulocytic cell of the bone marrow

A method of evaluation of transit time for maturating bone marrow granulocytes (from early committed to mature neutrophils) has been worked out on the basis of the analysis of the time course of bone marrow acute radiation syndrome according to the number of neutrophils in the peripheral blood. Transit time was found to change under pathological conditions, and to depend on the age and species of mammals. It comprised 28-36 days for normal humans, and 16.9 and 14.5 days for rabbits and rats, respectively. Transit time decrease for granulocytes of the bone marrow damaged by radiation is proportional to the dose of irradiation.
