Interrelations between the transit time of granulocytes through the medullary reserve and the total granulocytic mass of the blood

Movements of granulocytes, the granulocyte reserve of the bone marrow and the total mass of granulocytes in the blood was studied by the "in vivo" radioactive labeling technique with 32diisopropyl fluorophosphate, in 38 persons with splenomegaly, 24 of whom were splenectomized. There were no significant differences between the value of the total granulocyte mass in those with splenomegaly and the splenectomized individuals. The relative values of the half-life of circulating granulocytes (t/1/2) and the time of transfer of the intramedullary granulocyte reserve (IMGR) were evaluated. Both t/1/2 and IMGR were significantly shorter in the splenomegalous individuals than in the splenectomized persons. The patients with splenomegaly showed an increase in the marginal granulocyte mass at the expense of the circulating mass; the opposite occurred in the splenectomized persons.
