A new derivative of L-histidine, 1-guanidino-2-(4-imidazole)propionic acid (GIPA), was identified by high-performance liquid chromatography and field desorption mass spectrometry. GIPA in 25 samples of normal human urine was 1.9 +or- 0.9 mu mol/g creatinine (mean +or- s.d.).
