Computing "best fit" calorie-controlled diet patterns by microcomputer

A BASIC program was written for the IBM Personal Computer to plan "best fit" calorie-controlled diet patterns that meet specific nutritional goals. The ultimate goal of computerized diet planning is to individualize a patient's meal patterns. "Best fit" patterns are defined mathematically as those that minimize the percentage squared deviations from the desired pattern using a quadratic programming model. Nutrient constraints defined at the onset of meal pattern planning using the exchange list method by computer are 1) the calorie level of the diet, 2) a minimum level of protein, 3) a maximum percentage of total calories from fat, and 4) desired daily serving frequency. Tables present 1)the mathematical model used to compute "best fit" diet patterns, and 2) computed meal patterns for five diets with varying caloric levels and exchange patterns. (aje)
