In order to determine the correlation of the length of tapering and the degree of tortuosity of the pulmonary arteries with the pulmonary arterial pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance, pulmonary angiograms were studied in 54 infants and children with isolated ventricular septal defect undergoing diagnostic cardiac catheterization. The angiograms were analyzed for the length of tapering of the pulmonary arteries; degree of tortuosity of the pulmonary arteries. A good correlation existed between the hemodynamic data and angiographically determined values. Abrupt tapering and increased tortuosity of pulmonary arteries were noted to be associated with an increase in pulmonary arterial pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance. Pulmonary angiography therefore gives additional valuable information concerning the status of the pulmonary vascular bed.
