The effect of indomethacin on the peripheral blood picture in laboratory rats irradiated with gamma rays

The effect of single or repeated injection administration of indomethacin on peripheral blood picture of rats irradiated by single whole-body doses of gamma rays (5.5 and 6.0 Gy) was investigated. It has become obvious that the postirradiation administration of indomethacin stimulated the recovery of the peripheral granulocyte count. The stimulating effects of indomethacin on granulocyte level in peripheral blood were also apparent in non-irradiated rats. The unfavourable effect of higher doses of indomethacin became apparent in decreased red blood cell count in peripheral blood, possibly caused by ulcerogenic influence of this non-steroid antiphlogistic drug on mucous membrane of gastrointestinal tract with subsequent bleeding.
