The appearance and differentiation of the nerve fiber types in the smooth muscle of the large intestine have been investigated during pre- and postnatal human development. A sequential pattern of development of the nerve fibers has been observed. The differentiation of the cholinergic nerves was followed by the differentiation of the adrenergic, peptide- and 5-hydroxytryptamine-immunoreactive nerves. The different nerve fiber types appeared and matured earlier in the distal and proximal ends of the large intestine than in its middle parts. The innervation of the muscularis externa developed earlier than the innervation of the muscularis mucosae.
