Mitogen-free antigen was required to detect specific cell-mediated reactions by the lymphocyte transformation test. The suitability of the lymphocyte preparation could be verified by its response to lectin mitogen. Individual variation in response made it preferable to apply the test on whole herds instead of individual animals. The "stimulation index" affected interpretation of the results. The test was indicated in viral, chlamydial, protozoal and fungal (but not bacterial) infections.
