Efficacy of prophylactic anti-D immunoglobin injections

Data on Rh immunoglobulin prophylaxis in 624 Rh negative women were compared with that of 693 women not receiving anti-D-Ig (controls). Failure rate of 1.6 percent in the protected group was significantly lower than the 4.6 percent immunisation in the control group. The possible reasons for failure of prophylaxis were delayed administration of anti-D-Ig; complicated delivery; sensitization of patients at the time of anti-D-Ig administration, and poor quality of the product.
