Toxoids prepared by Haffkine Institute, Glaxo (India) Ltd. and Biological Evans were used for immunizing 58 group O healthy male and female adults and 718 group O pregnant women. While ABH antigens were detectable in the Glaxo toxoid, all 3 toxoid preparations showed a significant increase in saline and incomplete anti-A and anti-B titer levels. Antibody response gradually increased with the number of toxoid injections. Response was observed in 20% after 1 injection, 40% after 2 injections and 60% after 3 injections. Immunization with tetanus toxoid boosts anti-A and anti-B titers in pregnant women and normal adults. [The increased anti-A and/or anti-B response in pregnant women may have an undesirable effect on fetal red cells in ABO-incompatible pregnancies. Caution is warranted in administering these toxoids in the 3rd trimester as is often done in India.].
