Inactivation and multiplication of staphylococci in cultures of leucocytes and macrophages

Staphylococci were added to suspensions, in Hanks' solution, of leukocytes from human blood and macrophages from mouse peritoneum. After 15 min. oxacillin (25 micro g/ml) or streptomycin (50 micro g/ml) was added to the cultures. After four hours, 95-98% of Staph. albus and Staph. aureus were inactivated in the leukocyte suspensions, but from two days onwards intracellular multiplication of the bacteria was observed.
