50 patients with active hepatosplenic schistosomiasis and compensated liver were treated with niridazole at 15 mg/kg body weight daily (in divided doses) for 10 days and divided into 2 groups: 30 patients underwent splenectomy (group 1) and 20 patients received chemotherapy only (group 2). The IT with somatic Schistosoma mansoni antigen, COPT, leukocyte migration inhibition test (LMIT) and quantitation of immunoglobulins were performed before, and 3 and 6 months following treatment. Both groups showed significant increases in cell mediated immunity (IT and LMIT) and significant decreases in humoral immunity (serum immunoglobulins and COPT); these changes were more significant in group 1.
