A biotechnological production process for cinchona alkaloids: prospects and problems

The feasibility of various biotechnological production processes for Cinchona alkaloids is discussed. De-novo biosynthesis of the alkaloids by plant cell cultures seems to be more promising than by microorganisms, but the latter may be used in the biotransformation of intermediates. Further research is needed into the biochemistry and regulation of these alkaloids within the plant cells.
