Panaji, the capital of Goa, was non-endemic for malaria until 1986, when an outbreak of malaria occurred with 357 cases mostly confined to the Miramar area; in 1987 (up to June) 600 cases were recorded. The outbreak was found to be associated with extensive breeding of Anopheles stephensi and importation of labour. Emergency measures were instituted for control of the outbreak. They included spraying with DDT in the Miramar area. Unfortunately the room coverage achieved was only 52-54%. It is concluded that Panaji had no facilities to monitor anopheline populations and that surveillance and treatment of malaria at the initial stage of the outbreak was inadequate.
