A spectrophotometric method based on the reduction of sym-trinitrobenzene to dinitrophenylhydroxylamine by ascorbic acid in the presence of tartrate buffer, which on further treatment with hydrogen peroxide undergoes oxidative coupling to give tetranitroazoxybenzene, has been developed. The method is free from the interference of minerals, sugars and other vitamins. Several single component and multivitamin compositions were satisfactorily analyzed by this method. The colour system has a molar absorptivity of 7.6 .times. 103 mol-1 cm-1 at 480 nm. The procedure is simple and rapid and suitable for routine analysis.
