Based on survey data collected from 111 households in Chisang, a predominantly agricultural Terai village in Nepal, from July 1995-January 1996, the paper defines the existing household types and the circumstances surrounding the formation of Chisang's 85 nuclear households. The health status of all members of joint households and its relationship to the household formation process are discussed.
