The risk of cancer among 117 persons engaged in cleaning an area polluted with radioactive elements in Greenland in 1968, as well as among 13 persons possibly also so engaged, was compared with the risk in a similar population from the general Danish population. Four cancer cases were observed against an expected 2.68 (RR = 1.5; 95% CI, 0.40-3.83) or 2.99 if the 13 addition persons were included (RR = 1.3; CI 0.36-3.42). The cancer sites were rectum (1), prostate (1), testis (1) and renal pelvis (1), whereas cancer of the lung, liver of haematopoietic system (leukeamia/lymphoma) was expected following pollution with radioactive elements (plutonium, americium and tritium). Renewed follow-up of the cohort is recommended in the Cancer Registry after 5 years.
