Respiratory tract function in workers cleaning mazut-fired boilers

Fifty six men cleaning mazut-fired boilers were questioned about the incidence of chronic cough and expectoration of sputum. The spirography was also performed in this group. These persons reported chronic cough and expectoration of sputum more frequently in comparison with others in the control group. Frequency of incidence of these symptoms depended mainly on period of Udek employment and, in the lesser degree, on their age and smoking habit. Routine examinations of the function of their respiratory tract (FVC, FEVI, PEF) were normal. It was confirmed that MMFR value (maximal midexpiratory flow rate) decreased together with period of employment. It would mean that the ventilation of this workers starts to worsen due to obturation. Results of the examinations indicate the necessity of establishing optimally safe period of work in this profession.
